The art of tea in Japan, or "the way of tea" , is an iconic tradition that reflects Japanese philosophy and aesthetics. This article explores the historical origins of this practice, its different schools and ceremonies, as well as the cultural influence of tea in Japan.

Historical Origins

The history of tea in Japan begins in the 9th century, when Buddhist monks brought tea from China. These monks used tea as a way to aid meditation, appreciating its stimulating qualities. Over time, tea drinking spread among samurai and the aristocracy, becoming a symbol of status and sophistication.

The Way of Tea

The “way of tea” (Chadō or Sadō) is much more than just tea tasting; it is a spiritual and aesthetic discipline that integrates elements of Zen Buddhism, art, philosophy and harmony with nature. Chadō emphasizes four principles: harmony (和, wa), respect (敬, kei), purity (清, sei), and tranquility (寂, jaku).

Schools and Ceremonies

There are several schools of the tea way in Japan, each with their own techniques and aesthetics. The best known are the Urasenke school, the Omotesenke school, and the Mushakōjisenke school. These schools hold tea ceremonies, or "chanoyu", which can range from simple informal gatherings to elaborate rituals involving the preparation and presentation of matcha tea, as well as kaiseki meals.

Cultural Influence

Tea has deeply influenced Japanese culture, influencing art, cuisine, and even architecture. The utensils used in the tea ceremony are considered works of art, and the specially designed tea rooms, or "chashitsu", show the importance of harmony and simplicity. Matcha tea, in particular, has become a popular ingredient in modern Japanese cuisine, used in cakes, ice cream, and drinks.

We work directly with eco-friendly Japanese tea farms, ensuring full traceability of each tea leaf from its source to your cup.
